Life in Your 20s and Beyond...

Got my hair done last Saturday in my first ever attempt to remain perfectly coiffed. (It's not working. At this very moment, my very expensive cut-and-color is slumming it in a half ponytail. My stylist would be *gasp* horrified!)

As she's blowdrying my hair into an absolutely adorable 'do, she catches my eye in the mirror and says in a low, awe-stricken voice, "So, have you seen...the movie?"

I instantly grasp that she's referring to Sex and the City. Can I tell you, that I haven't felt this much peer-pressure since the Wonderbra came out? Is it truly, really that good? Am I really supposed to pull out my strappy sandals and eat greasy popcorn in couture?

Ohhh it was great! I won't give away any details, but I laughed, I cried and it was really the perfect girls outing. While my girlfriends (and our +1 gay male friend :) ) did not dress up in our designer] frocks (which we don't really have anyways)--it was 12:30pm on a Sunday, we did enjoy each other's company and lunch afterwards.

I say ignore the critics and take the movie for what it is--another chance to smile, laugh and relate to Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda! They really leave you wanting more, though in my opinion a sequel would ruin it for me.

It got so much publicity and everyone caught on to the hype. I have yet to see it because I heard it was like 2 and a half hours long and I am so busy right now to sit down and watch it :-/ I definitely want to see it soon as I am done with this apartment hunting...apparently at Hollywood in the suburbs, this movie theatre where you can get alcohol and sit in comfortable recliner chairs, girls were all dressed up and there were a few that got intoxicated even(lol). I also heard it was so crowded there opening night that some girl even got knocked over and hurt herself lol??? I did not wanted to see it on opening night for that reason.

I've always had mixed feelings about Sex & The City. On the one hand, it's one of the only shows/films that depicts single women as independent and career-oriented rather than as bitchy or lonely stereotypes. It's also rare to see positive female friendships on TV and SATC did a great job of presenting the girls' relationships as complex but not competitive. But on the other hand, I could definitely do without the ridiculous consumption and the limited idea of what it means to be beautiful (for example, there's a scene in the film where one of the characters is ridiculed for gaining what was, to me, an imperceptible amount of weight).

But I saw the movie and I liked it. I even teared up at one point. What I've gotten out of following these characters' lives is that even though my romantic troubles can sometimes seem devastating, they're really just episodes in a series that's going to have a lot more ups and downs. Very trite, I know. But seeing these other lives and romantic recoveries sped up and packed into 30 minutes has definitely gotten me through a breakup or two.

So, if you haven't already, I'd say see it. Hopefully there's some part of the show you relate to (even if it's not as cheesey as mine) and you'll enjoy reconnecting with it.
